Hi all,
Does anyone know contracted German Braille? I would like to learn it to help take notes faster in German classes this year. I only did a little German in school.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I don't know it but I want to learn German Braille in its entirety since I'm learning the language. How do you Braille umlauts if they're already dots, LOL!
The sad thing about braille is that each language has its own contracted braille. I can get through French and Spanish grade one, but that's where my knowledge stops. Anybody who considers themselves a braille expert has my undying admiration. I mean, think about how many codes we have: Nemmeth, Computer, music, not to mention foreign languages.
I suspect you've asked at the right website, but if you aren't sure, you might try the NLS website, or the Braille Authority of North America at www.bana.org.
Good luck,
Lou
I also want to learn kurzschrift (the german word for grade 2) I know a few of them though which I can tell you. EU = gh sign, nicht = n, ü = OU sign, ch = TH sign, sch = wh sign, er is the same, IN is the same, IE = ING sign, ED = EIN, EN is the same, I think that's all I know but there is more if I can dredge it up. I may have gotten 1 or 2 of those wrong but for the most part they are correct. Viel glück damit!
I can remember some of the German braille that I did at school, but thenagain, I only did German for 2 years. I've forgotten most of the words we learned to speak, so I probably haven't got much chance of rememberng the braille.
not sure what your intention was with the board, but here's what i remember from when i learned german:
e d sign: e i n
i n g: i e
s h: e i
n: nicht
d: das
m: man
g h: um not sure, e u like in freunde?
a r: a umlaut
o w: o umlaut
i n: same as in english
e n: question mark
that's about all i can remember for now. oh and the bit before is english braille equivalent signs of course.
hth,
simon
lol! i'm either tired or retarded or both, got the intention now, dunno where the brain was there, apologies.
th: ch.
er: the same as English.
46: capital letter sign, or is that in French?
You're right. 46 is the capital letter, but I think that's only if it is followed by lower-case letters. 45 is the cap sign if it's followed by more upper case. Like 66 is all caps in English braille.
Honestly, German braille ... is scary. And strange. But you know, I'm just learning too, so I guess it'll get less scary as I go on.
Tschau,
